Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball team won for the seventh time in their last nine tries, turning away conference foe Medgar Evers College, 93-74, in Brooklyn on Friday night. The win lifted the Dolphins to 10-9 overall and 6-2 in CUNYAC play, while the Cougars fell to 6-12, 2-7, respectively.
The Dolphins never trailed in the contest, and raced out to a quick, 9-2, lead at the 17:14 mark on three-straight three's by Mallory Ameneiros, Katelyn Hepworth and Danielle McLaughlin. From that point the game bounced back-and-forth as Medgar used a punishing attack on the glass to stay within striking distance.
Finally, at the 8:54 mark and with CSI nursing a slim, 25-21, lead, the Dolphins powered to an 11-0 run, marked by a pair of baskets each from Kristen Panariello and Olivia Tierno to get out to a 15-point, 36-21, lead, with 7:40 to go. CSI led by as many as 16 in the frame before the Cougars knocked it down to 46-36 at halftime.
After a Nicole McClain three-pointer knocked CSI's lead down to as few as seven to open the second half, CSI went on a 15-6 run to cushion the lead and from there, CSI sailed to the comfortable win, never leading by less than 13 points.
CSI was out-rebounded by a remarkable 58-27 count, but the Dolphins made up for it by forcing 33 Medgar Evers turnovers, as CSI was able to get off 22 more shots than the Cougars. Medgar also could not benefit from a remarkable amount of free-throw shooting. The Cougars shot just 14-of-37 from the charity stripe (37.8%), while CSI was able to make two-thirds of their freebies by shooting 10-of-15.
CSI was led by Kristen Panariello's 24 points and 10 assists, adding six steals. McLaughlin netted 19 points, while Tierno and Caitlin Johnson each posted 14 markers each. For MEC, Tiffany Thompson posted 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Shakimba Pierre posted 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
CSI will be back in action on Wednesday night, travelling to York College to take on the Cardinals in another CUNYAC test at 6pm.
